Irrigation of acidophilic plants. Acidophilic plants: from care to irrigation in order not to make changes in the pH of the soil. How to protect them from the heat and all the instructions for proper cultivation.

Acidophilic plants list: shrubs, trees, herbaceous, bulbous ... there are manyacidophilic plantsand many already live in our garden. The most common are hydrangeas, but also rhododendrons, azaleas, kalmias, camellias ... These plants need timely and not random irrigation!

The roots are very easy to damage from the sun and especially in summer, the health ofacidophilicit is put to the test, on the one hand by parasites and insects that thrive in high temperatures and, on the other, by the same high temperatures that risk damaging the root system and penalizing vegetative growth and flowering.


A first tip for thecultivation of the acidophilicit's airrigationeffective, consists in growing these plants in semi-shaded areas.

If the shade is not enough, you can mount dark nets such as those used against hail, racks or set up temporary tents.


In the height of summer, avoid pruning acidophilic plants because you would go to expose the most internal and delicate parts of the plant directly to the sun, which generally do not have to resist the sun's rays.


Acidophilic plants slow their growth in summer, do not be fooled by the flowers ... In these months of the year, avoid excessive fertigation and above all fertilizers rich in nitrogen; better fertilize with phosphorus and potassium based products that improve the accumulation of reserve substances for the plant.


Mulching makes soil wetting more effective and protects the roots of acidophilic plants. The material of choice for themulchof theacidophilic plantsit is the pine bark that provides organic matter and keeps the soil moist. Do not be stingy with the thickness: arrange a layer of bark of at least 15 cm over the entire base of the plant.

Irrigation of acidophilic plants

A good irrigation is performed in synergy with the mulch so as to obtain a double benefit using only water:

  • Wet the mulching material with spray water (watering can, surface water jet, drip irrigation), to give a reserve of steam to the foliage that will rise in the hottest hours of the day.
  • With a cannula, wet the soil below the mulch layer in order to reach the root system more easily.

L'water to irrigate acidophilesit must not be that of the tap because it is too calcareous!

The calcareous water tends to raise the pH of the soil, making it unlivable for acidophiles. Ideally, the water used to irrigate acidophilic plants should have a pH equal to that of the soil.

The limestone contained in the irrigation water is the worst enemy of acidophilic plants: it accumulates and triggers diseases such as iron chlorosis (causes yellowing of the leaves) and other nutritional deficiencies.

Tap water can be specially "treated" (softened) in order to become compatible with the life of oursacidophilic. To sweeten the waterirrigation of acidophilic plants you can:

  • Add acidic elements such as a tablespoon of wine vinegar for every 10 liters of water. You should let the vinegar act for 12 hours before irrigation. Irrigate without stirring the water and discarding the bottom from the watering can where the calcium salts (limestone) have accumulated.
  • You can continue with the filtration, add acid blonde peat or bark (needles and coniferous pine cones) to the watering can. Let the water rest in the container for at least 24 hours and then use it to irrigate. The pine cones, needles and barks can be reused about twenty times (20 times for 10 liters of water). After use, you can use these materials (acid-forming medium) for mulching hedges.

In summer theacidophilicthey must be irrigated constantly, without letting the soil dry out completely between irrigations.
